Making breast cancer treatment faster, safer, more convenient, and less expensive.
About
One-in-eight women in U.S. will get breast cancer at some point in their lives. It is the most common non-skin cancer for American women. Early stage breast cancer is treated by removing the tumor then irradiating the whole breast to eliminate any remaining cancer cells. Yet post-operative radiation is problematic. It requires five to seven weeks of daily irradiation sessions, results in troubling short and long-term side effects, and costs more than the surgery itself. The result is an unfortunate and dangerous reality: one-in-three patients prematurely discontinue radiation therapy, and a similar proportion must undergo re-operation to remove cancer that was missed. We have designed an ablation probe that will allow surgeons to perform an intra-operative procedure that destroys residual cancer cells in minutes instead of weeks, does not require dangerous ionizing radiation, and dramatically reduces treatment costs compared to conventional therapy.
